Have you or a loved one been diagnosed with diabetes? If yes, you are not alone. Diabetes is one of the most common health conditions across the United States. Regardless of the type, it is extremely important that you take good care of your health to effectively manage and control diabetes. For example, one vital thing you can do is drink alkaline water and stay hydrated, especially during the summer.

How Diabetes Affects Your Body

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetic patients feel hotter than people who don’t have diabetes. This is mainly for two reasons. Diabetes complications, such as damaged nerves and blood vessels can affect your sweat glands. This can further prevent the body from cooling down efficiently, which can also lead to heatstroke.

Moreover, diabetic patients are susceptible to dehydration when they get in the heat. Unfortunately, this causes excessive water loss through sweating and eventually, an increase in their blood sugar levels. When your blood sugar level is high, you tend to urinate more, which can further dehydrate your body. Heat can also affect the way your body absorbs insulin. When you experience dehydration during the summer, less blood flows to your skin. Consequently, most insulin types don’t work in the event of decreased blood flow.

Managing Diabetes When It’s Hot Outside

Let’s take a look at the best care tips to help you better manage diabetes this summer:

Stay Hydrated with Alkaline Water

Whether you’re thirsty or not, you need to drink plenty of water during the hot summer days to stay cool and keep your blood sugar level in check. You may also drink alkaline water. This drinking water is above the pH level 7 –  rich in minerals, such as calcium, magnesium and potassium electrolytes – that provide a natural energy boost without the sugar.

Besides this, avoid caffeinated drinks, including tea and coffee and even alcohol because they can result in water loss and thus increase your blood sugar levels.

Monitor Your Blood Sugar throughout the Day

Check and monitor your blood sugar at home with a blood glucose meter. This is important to do so as very hot temperatures can cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate. If you test your blood sugar level frequently, you can take immediate and appropriate actions to keep it stable.

Avoid Sunburn

When going out in the heat, make sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen, wear a wide-brimmed hat and protective clothing to avoid sunburn. Sunburn can cause inflammation, which can raise blood sugar.

Take Care of Your Feet

If you’re planning to go to the beach with friends and family to beat the heat, then we’d recommend you to take care of your feet. Don’t walk barefoot, especially if you have nerve damage. This can lower your ability to feel the hot sand and sharp objects, so you might hurt yourself and not even realize it.  Also, freely elevate your feet to prevent swelling and edema. Again, when you drink water or even alkaline water, this helps keep your feet from becoming puffy.

From swimming to playing sports on the beach or just walking on the sand, many summer activities put diabetics at the risk of foot injuries. Unfortunately, this can result in more serious diabetic complications—even amputation. Therefore, it is very important that you keep your feet covered and well-protected, no matter where you are.
